COVID-19: The Heart Disease You Did Not Know You Had

The medical community discovered some time ago that SARS-COVID-2 (the COVID) does more damage than just to the respiratory system. This virus has been visiting other areas of the body, like the heart, liver, brain. What a busy little virus! But, here is the kicker, COVID is not working alone. Our bodies are giving this virus the green light to cause mayhem and inviting other illnesses to come and play. I am going to skip around here a little bit so try to bear with me; I promise to be as entertaining in my education as possible.

COVID-19 and Your Heart

Myocarditis is, in simple terms, inflammation of the heart muscles (the myocardium). Myocarditis can affect not only your heart muscles but also the electrical system causing the reduced ability to pump blood efficiently, along with abnormal or rapid heartbeats (or rhythms, which are known as arrhythmias).

This inflammation is most often caused by a viral infection, just like we see now with COVID-19. However, the problem does not stop at just inflammation, which by itself is potentially life-threatening. Cardiac damage is a real problem for people with viral myocarditis, meaning the death of heart cells, which leads to a weakening of the heart wall.

The problem people see right now, though, is that even in young people and those who may have been infected but were asymptomatic (as in, had no symptoms), doctors still see this kind of damage to the heart. This damage is the leading cause of why colleges and professional sports leagues are taking extreme precautions when it comes to the health and safety of their teams. At the same time, they make decisions about whether or not they are going to have a season at all. As of right now, more than a dozen athletes in the Power 5 conference schools are dealing with heart issues caused by being infected with the COVID virus.

The Role of the Cytokine Storm

The problem scientists and doctors are having is that they are not exactly sure if the myocarditis is caused directly from the virus attacking the heart tissue or if an individual's immune systems are over-attacking the virus in what is known as a cytokine storm. For those of you out there who are not familiar with the term cytokine storm, let me summarize it for you.

Vivid images of an out of control immune system going haywire; along with a raging inflammatory response with no sign of slowing as it tears through the body, this is a simple explanation of the cytokine storms.

Now, cytokines are nothing more than a diverse group of proteins (small ones) that get secreted by the cells to create signals and communicate healthcare directions. So, imagine your communication department on the fritz calling in the entire military to fight off the invader in your body. But, maybe, only one branch of the military is needed, and the rest is nothing but over-kill. While this is great in an actual war zone setting, inside the body is an entirely different story.

Let's Do Something Together, okay?

Please close your eyes (do not literally close them because then you could not read what I am trying to get you to visualize) for a moment and picture this with me: storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Except, instead of a massive enemy force, you are standing face to face with a beach containing nothing but some not so threatening childhood toys. Maybe, instead of a beach full of enemy soldiers, you see a few hundred windup soldiers, a few hundred nutcrackers, and maybe 50 Rock'Em, Sock'Em robots (most of you will not know what those are, it is okay to google them, I will not hold it against you).

Since the entirety of the military got called to action, they have to do something.

That is when the storm starts. These super immune cells start fighting the enemy before them, but when all the enemy is defeated, they do not know how to call it a victory and return home. Instead, they continue fighting, causing an expansive buildup of dead immune cells that do nothing but clog up your lungs with thick mucous that becomes difficult to cough out, thus the feeling of concrete filling the lungs.

Unfortunately, acute lung injury (ALI) is a common adverse effect of a cytokine storm in the respiratory environment and systemic circulation. Pathogenic lung injury can progress to ALI or the more severe form, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is what we are seeing in those individuals who get hospitalized while trying to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Even healthy people have succumbed to the destruction caused by their immune over-response. COVID-19 is not just an illness that affects people over 50-years of age.

Back to the Heart

Okay, we have discussed the cytokines and their role in COVID-19 infections. Let us get back on track and move from the lungs to the heart. We have seen that COVID has an affinity for the ACE-2 receptors, and those are throughout our bodies. What an inconvenient fact if you think about it, because ACE-2 receptors tend to be in places we do not want viral infections to visit (lungs, heart, brain, and other vital organs).

The COVID finds its way from the lungs into the circulatory system, where it makes a pitstop in the heart. Instead of the cytokine storm starting in the lungs, the virus traveled so quickly that now the heart muscles will be the site of the D-Day siege. Now is when you see an increased number of myocarditis cases, as mentioned earlier.

Myocarditis is not a joke. Especially since COVID-carditis can strike even if a patient has been asymptomatic, resulting in weakened heart muscle tissue, and eventually, myocardial infarction (heart attacks). That is right. I just said that if you catch the COVID, even if you never get any symptoms, you could still be at increased risk of heart attack secondary to COVID-19 infection. I could keep going, but I would never get to the happy ending of this article.

What Now?

I want to inform everyone that I have some pretty good news. Our planet has some amazing surprises up her sleeve. There are many who say "if it isn't created in a laboratory, by a pharmaceutical company, then it must be 'snake oil.'

And for those out there who choose to be blind to what is really going on, I hope one day that you will be able to see. Through information based on 'real' scientists, we have discovered several herbs and combinations that have shown the ability to help individuals inflicted with this aspect of the COVID to get their bodies to recover, protect their hearts, and restore the electrical impulses back to a normal rhythm.

While "real science" is working on trying to create a vaccine, why does it seems as though that is the only thing that matters? Why is a vaccine, that may or may not work more important than focusing on therapeutics or preventatives?

Myocarditis is challenging to treat with pharmaceuticals. However, due to evidence-based scientific research (that must be counted by "real scientists"), people finally realize that the reason we call our planet Mother Earth is that "Mother Knows Best."

I am not going to get into all the different herbs that have been shown to help this virus caused ailment right now. That is not the point of this article or any other blog post. The purpose is to inform as many people as we can about the gravity of the situation we have yet to get out from under. Understand that we are doing our very best to not only bring you up-dated information but to bring you accurate, correct, honest information.

Please leave us a comment or reach out to us with any questions or comments you have. We look forward to providing more information as the days roll forward.

May the sun shine brightly on all of your days!
